I grew up in a conservative home. I have always labeled myself a pro-lifer, and have voted accordingly. On the ballot in the state of Colorado this year is an amendment called Definition of a Person. It is supposed to be a way for our courts to regulate abortion by defining a person as any human being from the moment of fertilization.
At first this sounded good to me. I agree with the fact that a person is a person from the moment of fertilization. God's word says it.
In the past few years God has put some amazing women into my life, women I love, value, and respect. These women have shown me the emotional and spiritual pain they faced in having an abortion. I have come to realize two things through these women.
1) No one wants to abort their baby.
2) We are to love these women. Not make them experience further shame, God certainly doesn't.
Recently a young woman in our church underwent the physical and emotional pain of loosing a baby due to a tubal pregnancy. She's been wanting a baby for a long time and I can only imagination the deep pain she feels at finally being pregnant and not being able to see that pregnancy come to fruition. Without removing this pregnancy though, the health of this young woman would be at stake.
If amendment 48 passes it would make this type of procedure a legal matter instead of a personal one. I cannot live with that.
This is why I voted against amendment 48. Abortion is aweful and I don't believe there is anyone who would say otherwise, but I do believe that sometimes it is the lesser of two evils. I wish this world were not full of pain, but it is. And it is our job to share a Savior who can ease that pain and redeem our mistakes.
disclaimer: I am not telling you how to vote. I am simply making the argument for why I voted the way I did.

Go Lori! I definitely agree with your reasons. My main problem with this amendment is the kind of power we would be giving our government. It is a dangerous thing to agree that the government can define life...This will lead us down a scary road indeed.
